I made these socks on a camping trip around Iceland August 2009. Late August in Iceland is cold. My son Bjartur is the way he is, wet socks are a very common thing for him. I forgot to take woolen socks for him so his dad found this perfect solution, to knit him a pair. I got myself to the next shop in Husavik, bought the Icelandic woolen thread, Einband from Istex. The socks where ready two days later and Bjartur couldn´t keep them off, he just loved them. The reason why I crocheted the heel is because I couldn´t remember how to knit it. Plus it´s just so cool.
Istex – Einband (2 threads)
You can make the socks with stripes or anything you like.
They are knitted in the round with 4 double pointed needles. The heel is crocheted.
The socks in the photo are for a shoe size 27 (slim foot). There is no problem making them bigger or smaller, just add or decrease stitches, use bigger needles with yarn that fits…. and so on.
4 double pointed needles 3,5mm
Crochet needle 2,5 mm
St/s = stitch/es
K = Knit
P = Purl
DC = Double crochet
SK = Skip
Tog = Together
Cast on 30 sts with 2 threads of Einband with the double pointed needles 4mm. 10 sts on each needle ( you knit with the fourth needle). Join in round.
Rib: K1, P1. Repeat to end of round.
Knit like this until desired length of rib.
K until desired length from rib to heel.
Fasten off sts for heel:
Fasten of 7 sts, K15, fasten off 8 sts.
Cast on 7 sts (they come instead of the 7 sts that where fastened off), K15, cast on 8 sts (they come instead of the 7 sts that where fastened off). Join in round again.
K until desired length from heel to toes.
1. round: *K4, K2 tog*, repeat from *-* to end of round.
2. round: K
3. round: *K3, K2 tog*, repeat from *-* to end of round.
4. round: K
5. round: *K2, K2 tog*, repeat from *-* to end of round.
6. round: K
7. round: *K1, K2 tog*, repeat from *-* to end of round.
8. round: * K2 tog*, repeat from *-* to end of round.
Fasten off and draw the thread trough the remaning sts.
Make 1 DC into each st of the hole you left for the heel = 30 sts. (Starting at the back of the heel).
Make 1 DC to each DC skipping 1 DC in each side of the heel in every round. Do this until you have approx. 10 sts left. Skip every other DC in the next round. Fasten off and make up all ends.
